An immersive Digital Twin to revitalize a city, mapping the city of Edmonton and presenting valuable data through elegant visualizations.

problem
Downtown Edmonton faced challenges in urban planning and infrastructure management including inefficient resource allocation, suboptimal event planning and a lack of integrated data visualization. These issues hindered efforts to revitalize the area and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.
solution
Our team at Unity developed an interactive digital twin, a real-time virtual representation of the city's physical infrastructure. This digital twin integrated various data sources, enabling stakeholders to visualize and analyze urban dynamics effectively. The platform facilitates informed decision-making in infrastructure development, optimizes event planning and supports initiatives aimed at enhancing downtown vitality.
my Role
Design Lead for Telus and the City of Edmonton on the Smart City project, responsible for UX processes and Design Delivery.

Overview
Beginning with data research, I gathered over a hundred types of city data such as metro routes and transportation lines, population density, property value ranges, crime data, building information and areas for future land development. Creating the information architecture, the data was grouped and structured into four main categories to allow for clear navigating, viewing and aligned each data type with its own unique visualization.
Along with setting a visual style for city roads, rivers, buildings and parks, each data type also required unique visualizations that tied into the city. A strong design system was built that extended to include unique icons and pins, a series of stylized lines, heat maps, census tracts, animating charts and info panels where users could choose to view up to 6 visualizations at once.
In an immersive experience, users are able to digitally freely roam around the city of Edmonton and toggle visually interesting data and information related to crime & public safety, transportation, communities and city vision.
