LEGO Technic CONTROL+

Extending play beyond the building experience for the top toy maker in the world with a focus on authentic and fun controllers, gamification and STEM learning.

problem

LEGO builders dedicate time and effort into building a model, just for it to be displayed on a shelf. The main challenge was to extend the play experience beyond building and design a seamless and engaging way for users to interact with their models. Because every LEGO Technic model has unique capabilities like speed, ruggedness and the ability to lift, load or flip, each app experience required different features to align with every model. Users needed a way to easily build, control and experience the full potential of each model, based on real vehicles from Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Audi, Liebherr and other manufacturers. The design had to focus on making the experience authentic, providing control, STEM-learning and inspiring play.

solution

With the CONTROL+ app, we focused on authenticity, control, fun and learning. Every model’s key strength was identified to provide the best app features to extend the play experience. Visually authentic controllers were created for all models and each release had several extra features to enhance the connection between builders and their model. Some app features included interactive learning experiences while some complex models had build guides with live diagnostics. Other features were based on driving challenges, gamification and AR experiences. The CONTROL+ app offers builders across the globe new ways to experience their models.

my role

I had the privilege of working with LEGO as an agency consultant, serving as Lead Designer (2023-2025) and Senior Designer (2019-2023) on the external team for the LEGO Technic CONTROL+ app, contributing to over 10 model releases. Over the span of six years, I designed advanced controller systems, gamified experiences, and real-time diagnostics for complex builds. Within our team, I would co-ordinate with the Project Management & Development Leads, being responsible for design planning and delivery. I also collaborated with the client team directly, leading presentations, gathering feedback and ideating through meaningful strategic conversations on a weekly basis leading to developing a trusting relationship throughout the entirety of the project. Additionally, I played a key role in two successful RFPs resulting in multi-year engagements.

Overview

CONTROL+ is an iOS and Android app which main feature allows users to control advanced LEGO Technic models through bluetooth connection, transforming the play experience with precision and interactivity. Globally available, CONTROL+ is localized to 26 languages and is designed with accessibility in mind, appealing to many fans as they experience a deeper connection to their model.

Defining Challenges

• In 2024, we went through a company acquisition from Unity to Capgemini. There was a contract complexity at one time which instantly denied communication between our team and the client for two months. During this time, we were in the design process for a big release and couldn’t get caught behind schedule for a fixed deadline. As Design Lead, I met with our PM and Dev Lead to adjust our design schedule and prioritized features that were consistent to other models. We completed the design of four key features and also worked ahead by preparing documentation for Dev and QA. We also continued to work on bigger features that require more iteration and client feedback, these were frequently discussed during Design Syncs where we would use our familiarity and history with the client to help us make key decisions and prepare reasoning behind each design decision. Once we were able to communicate with the client again, we were back on track within two big update presentations. We provided a review of our progress, addressed any feedback, earned design approval within our set schedule and continued to deliver on time.

• In 2022, we were crafting the experiences for one of the biggest models in the company’s history, the Liebherr Crawler Crane. This model comprised of a rotating turnbase, two independent driving tracks, a 4-way moving arm and a hook connected by string that can be raised and lowered. Knowing that users will be dedicating hours into building this complex model, we created a feature that allows testing and provides confirmation during several key stages of the buiding process. I led the design of a Build Diagnostics feature which helps prevent building errors early, gradually introduces the controller ui as key moments in the build process are reached and allows users the chance to test and control their build before completion.

• In 2021, I was leading the design of the controller for the Caterpillar Dozer, a heavy-duty construction vehicle with a complex control scheme. For all of our controllers, we aim to provide an authentic experience as if the user is sitting in the cockpit of the vehicle. In this case, the amount of controls may be too complex. The solution was to offer two sets of controls that can be easily swapped via a toggle switch. For the design of a simplified controller, we incorporated a 360-joystick that allows the user to drive around without releasing their touch.

The authentic controller variation came together after more deep research into the actual vehicle operator’s manual. The operator adjusts speed using a foot pedal, each of the hands operate a lever that controls left or right track steering while using a shift knob to control the drive/reverse gears. There are also controls for the ladder, ripper and a 4-way control for the blade. We also wanted to make sure that users can have full control while holding the device comfortably in their hands and not requiring any tricky grip positions. Digging in to as many use-cases and blending authenticity, I incorporated three independent sliders for controlling speed and steering with precision. For the control of other model features, we paired the driving controls with other UI elements like toggle switches, various buttons and another slider. Each control had its own visual treatment, function and presence on screen. Through usability testing and iteration, it was ensured that all interactions were clear, seamless and comfortable.

Evolving the app

To extend the longevity of the app, we migrated design flows to new tools and approaches. This aligned with industry and OS standards, optimizing efficiency and ensuring scalability for future updates. All designs for the first several models from 2019–2020 were designed purely with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, which was vital to creating a skeuomorphic visual style. For better efficiency, we incorporated Sketch in 2020 and migrated all UI elements to Sketch while using PS and AI for controller designs.

After taking a look at Figma, we realized that all designs can be created with one tool with the advantages of easier collaboration, version control and Developer hand-off. In 2021, we began to use Figma for all design and documentation.

In 2022, CONTROL+ had over seven model releases and we improved our Vehicle Select screen to improve navigation and be more versatile for future releases.

With new motor and hub technology in the models, we also focused on streamlining model charging, connectivity, firmware update and calibration flows. From 2023, we provided a greater focus on accessibility through colour usage, enhanced audio and haptic feedback. With added user testing and iteration, we improved on multiple areas that were brought to our attention and used this as guidance for future releases.

Impact

The CONTROL+ app has a 4.8 rating on the iOS store with 8,800+ reviews and continues to allow advanced LEGO Technic models to shine, offering a seamless experience that blends real-world functionality with immersive gameplay. By designing interactive controls, incorporating STEM-based learning features and inspiring play with gamification, builders have a new way to connect with their models and CONTROL+ is a staple product line for for the world’s biggest toy maker.
